Background of the study:

Road transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in determining healthcare accessibility, particularly in areas where health facilities are dispersed. In Owo Local Government Area, inadequate road networks and poor transportation services hinder timely access to healthcare facilities, resulting in delays in medical care and increased health risks (Akinola, 2023). Many residents face challenges reaching hospitals and clinics, especially in emergencies, due to deteriorated roads and limited public transport options (Balogun, 2024). This lack of efficient transportation not only affects patient outcomes but also places additional strain on the local healthcare system by delaying critical interventions. Recent studies have shown that improvements in road transportation can significantly enhance healthcare accessibility and reduce mortality rates (Fashina, 2025). This study investigates the impact of road transportation on healthcare accessibility in Owo by analyzing transportation infrastructure, travel times, and healthcare utilization patterns. The findings aim to inform policy recommendations for infrastructural upgrades and transportation planning to improve health service access.

Statement of the problem:

In Owo Local Government Area, poor road transportation infrastructure significantly limits access to healthcare services. Delays in reaching medical facilities due to deteriorated roads and inadequate transport options compromise patient outcomes, highlighting the need for an evaluation of transportation’s impact on healthcare accessibility (Olu, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

1. To assess the quality of road transportation in Owo.

2. To determine the effect of transportation on healthcare accessibility.

3. To recommend infrastructural improvements to enhance access.

Research questions:

1. What is the condition of road transportation in Owo?

2. How does transportation quality affect healthcare accessibility?

3. What improvements can facilitate better access to health services?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Poor road transportation is significantly associated with reduced healthcare accessibility.

2. Delays in transportation negatively impact patient outcomes.

3. Upgrading transportation infrastructure will enhance healthcare access.

Significance of the study:

This study provides evidence of the critical role road transportation plays in healthcare access, guiding policymakers in infrastructural planning that can improve timely medical care and overall public health in Owo Local Government Area (Adebisi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study is limited to analyzing the impact of road transportation on healthcare accessibility in Owo Local Government Area, focusing solely on local transportation infrastructure and healthcare utilization data.

Definitions of terms:

1. Road Transportation: The network and services facilitating vehicular travel on roads.

2. Healthcare Accessibility: The ease with which individuals can reach and use healthcare services.

3. Infrastructure Upgrades: Improvements made to physical structures and services that support transportation.
